The majority of women attempt breastfeeding, less than 50 % maintain breastfeeding. The rate of breast milk production relates to the degree of emptiness or fullness of the breasts. Human milk is superior to formula in regards to proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, hormones, enzymes, growth factors and protective agents. The first milk that is secreted is colostrum. Colostrum may not be high in volume, however, it is very important for its high antibody concentration. Colostrum also helps to establish the beneficial bacteria that is needed in the infants gut.

Traumatic brain injury accounts for 70-80% of trauma deaths in children. Most common cause of traumatic brain injury is motor vehicle accident vs a bicycle. Children do not have proper riding habits and do not wear helmets. Helmets can decrease the risk of bicycle related traumatic brain injury by 70-90%.

Trauma is the number one cause of serious morbidity and mortality in children. Motor vehicle accidents are the number one cause of death. All 50 states have laws mandating the use of child restraint devices for infants traveling in motor vehicle. Many states also have laws for children up to 3 years of age. Only 1/5th of 4-5 year olds are properly restrained at all times while in a motor vehicle.

Constipation is common in children between the ages of 3-7 years. The definition of constipation is hard painful stools. Some sources feel constipation is failure to pass 3 stools per week. Always discuss a concern of your child’s constipation with his or her physician. The most common form of constipation is “Functional fecal retention”, however, constipation can also be a sign of much more serious issues that need to be addressed.
