Urinary tract infections (UTI) in females less than 5 years of age and boys at any age need to be evaluated and properly worked up. Urinary tract infections in young children can many times be due to an anatomic abnormality of the urinary system.

Pediatric Pearls Show 009: Bringing Baby Home.. What to Expect

Before bringing your newborn home from the hospital you need to have some basic items. Have diapers, extra outfits, blankets, infant Tylenol, diaper cream, bathing essentials, bulb nose suction and finger nail clippers on hand. For those infants who are formula fed, make sure you have formula at home.

Pediatric Pearls Show 005: Childhood Obesity (Part 1)

This episode is part 1 of a two part series on childhood/adolescent obesity. Today’s topic will discuss the why of obesity and the complications that may occur with obesity. Episode #6 discusses things that can be done to prevent obesity.

Obesity is currently an epidemic for our children. One in three children and adolescents are overweight or obese. The majority of obese adolescents become obese adults. There is also a strong correlation of parental obesity and the risk of the child becoming obese. Adolescents are starting to show changes in the blood vessels for atherosclerosis.

Pediatric Pearls Show 004: Constipation

Constipation is common in children between the ages of 3-7 years. The definition of constipation is hard painful stools. Some sources feel constipation is failure to pass 3 stools per week. Always discuss a concern of your child’s constipation with his or her physician. The most common form of constipation is “Functional fecal retention”, however, constipation can also be a sign of much more serious issues that need to be addressed.

Pediatric Pearls Show 003: Ear Infections

 

 

Ear infections are the most commonly diagnosed childhood disease. The majority of children have at least one ear infection by 2 years of age. Recurrent or chronic ear infections can have associated challenges in hearing and language development. Some predisposing factors that may contribute to ear infections include environmental smoke exposure, child-care attendance and limited breastfeeding. Some known risk factors for ear infections include allergies, head and face abnormalities, genetic diseases and immunodeficiency states.
