Autism is on the rise now affecting 1 out of every 150 children. Autism consists of a multitude of symptoms that consist of an impairment of social interactions, impaired development of language and communication and a restricted range of interests and activities. You may hear some discussion of autism spectrum disorders which include such disorders as Autism, Asperger’s and Pervasive Developmental Disorder.

Pedaitric Pearls Show 017 : Thumb and Finger Sucking

The majority of children engage in finger or thumb sucking at some point, however, they usually outgrow this behavior by 4 years of age. It is predominate in both males and females. Females have a harder time stopping. There is no evidence that thumb and finger sucking have an increased association with ear infections. Children will engage is these behaviors for comfort, due to stress, habit forming or as a newborn reflex that does not resolve itself. Usually thumb and finger sucking have no negative affects, however, it can become a concern if it starts causing infections, irritates atopic dermatitis or affects the dentition.

Pediatric Pearls Show 016: Prevention of Lawn Mower Injuries

A topic of discussion that we as physicians seem to neglect is lawn mower safety. As parents become more involved in work outside the home, adolescents are taking on more responsibility at home. More than 16,000 kids under the age of 19 were treated in doctors’ offices, clinics and emergency rooms for lawn mower-related injuries in 2007. Parents need to understand that lawn mowers can cause devastating injuries to children that can impact the rest of their lives. Some children require multiple surgical procedures involving multiple specialists.
