Atopic dermatitis is a continually relapsing itchy rash that is commonly seen in children. This response may be due to allergies of food or environment, climate, sweat, infections, stress, etc. The onset usually begins at 2-3 months of age and one may see periodic exacerbations into adulthood.

The location of the rash changes as the infant gets older. Rash seems to be more prominent in the winter months. There is an association between atopic dermatitis, allergies and asthma. The main therapies that are available include keeping the skin moist, avoid precipitating factors that worsen the rash, antibiotics if the rash becomes infected and decreasing the inflammation that is associated with atopic dermatitis. Some alternative therapies include Chinese herbal teas, fatty acids, decreasing cow’s milk or irritating food, heavy metal removal and looking for nutritional deficiencies.
