Before bringing your newborn home from the hospital you need to have some basic items. Have diapers, extra outfits, blankets, infant Tylenol, diaper cream, bathing essentials, bulb nose suction and finger nail clippers on hand. For those infants who are formula fed, make sure you have formula at home.
Keep in mind your newborn will sleep on average 20 hours per day in the beginning, have 6-8 wet diapers per day and multiple stools. Newborns will feed every 2-4 hours depending if they are breast or formula fed. Normal newborn exam findings will be discussed by your baby’s doctor. Signs that should alert you to contact your pediatrician immediately include fever, not feeding, jaundice, rashes, difficulty to awaken and vomiting. Infants should never sleep on their belly due to the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Have the car seat properly installed prior to leaving the hospital with your newborn.
