Trauma is the number one cause of serious morbidity and mortality in children. Motor vehicle accidents are the number one cause of death. All 50 states have laws mandating the use of child restraint devices for infants traveling in motor vehicle. Many states also have laws for children up to 3 years of age. Only 1/5th of 4-5 year olds are properly restrained at all times while in a motor vehicle.

This can lead to significant intestinal trauma and spinal cord injury and death. Any child less than 15 years of age sitting in the rear seat has a decreased risk of fatal injury by 27 %. Airbags increase the risk of death for any child less than 13 years of age sitting in the front seat. The number of passengers traveling with a teen driver has a direct influence on the risk of an accident. Check with your local fire department or police department for proper car seat and booster seat guidelines depending upon the age and weight of your child.
